BALMS & BUTTERS & SALVES

Balms, butters, and salves use no water and are also used to add moisture to your skin.

Balms– use oils and herbs with a wax as the base.  The consistency is hard, oily and smooth.  Often used as a moisture barrier

Butters-has a butter base like Shea with a carrier oil like jojoba, also with or without a wax like beeswax.  They are commonly used for dry skin.

Salves are typically made with an oil, essential oils or herbs, and sometimes wax like beeswax (but less than than a balm).  The consistency is soft and thought to absorb into the skin easier than a balm.   Salves are used for irritation or a specific condition like eczema, psoriasis, dry cracked skin, or insect bites, and are not meant to be used on your whole body like a lotion.
